My brother told me to never let a
boy touch me, or I would turn into
a mound of pale sand. We lived
on the coast, so I knew I’d wash away
if I met hands with anyone that
smelled like Father’s aftershave.

Sometimes I wonder, when my brother
is touching anyone that smells like
hairspray, does he see my favorite shade
of nail polish, does he realize that
he drinks girls who are sisters, daughters?
Or does he ignore Mother’s advice,
and continue kissing girls he could never
open our front door for?

When my brother calls me and
asks if my lips are still dry of masculinity,
I tell him not to worry, I’ve only been
sleeping in libraries. I do not like lying to
him, but I worry that the day he finds
I am the favorite beverage of all the
waterproof boys, he will stop opening
our front door.
